"If you don't know your options, you don't have any." - Diana Korte
Fighting against the pain, for example tightening, flexing or tensing with the contractions will only make the pain worse and less bearable. Some women don't experience pain or hardly any at all. Most of the time there is pain, pressure and discomfort. However, if you let the contractions take over and let the birth happen naturally it will be less of a burden to take on the pain with no medication.
Some tips include:
Keeping you face relaxed (no scrunchie faces)
Keeping your mouth open
Let you hands be open and not balled up or in a fist
Move the toes and feet back and forth
Relax your shoulders and roll them back and forth
Your doula can see and find those tense spots and either massage them, touch them or whisper for you to pay attention to those areas.
Practicing with your labor coach (usually Dad) and doing visualization and relaxation techniques too. The more you practice the more it will come back to you in birth.
